Extra-Curricular Learning Opportunities

Extra-Curricular Learning Opportunities

Children’s University

Children’s University Newcastle encourages students to discover new learning experiences outside of the classroom, in their local and regional community and on campus. The children build their own learning program by engaging in extracurricular activities throughout the year.

Participants that reach 30 hours of learning, collected in their Children's University Passports, are invited to attend a formal graduation ceremony to celebrate and acknowledge the children (and their supporters) and their commitment to learning.

Debating

KSPS offers the opportunity for Year 5 and 6 students to compete in the Premier’s Debating Challenge each year. Students learn key debating skills including rebuttal, arguments, definitions and key speaker roles. Students then have the opportunity to apply these skills, representing the school in debates against other schools.

ICAS Assessments

ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee and Digital Technologies.

Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.

Public Speaking

King Street Public School incorporates a public speaking competition into its broader curriculum, supporting the 'Speaking and Listening' outcomes of the NSW K–6 English Syllabus. Each year, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in this event, which focuses on building their speech writing and presentation skills. The competition offers students a valuable opportunity to develop confidence in public speaking and, for some, the chance to advance and present at zone or regional levels.

Representative Sport Opportunities

King Street Public School are a part of the Upper Hunter Primary School Sporting Association which gives our students the opportunity to be included in a wide range of sports in inter-school competitions.

Our sporting teams also have the opportunity to participate in gala days and other competitions.

School Band

King Street Public School has a School Band facilitated by Mr Howard Ward with focussed lessons each Friday.  The band perform at whole school assemblies throughout the year. The music students are also invited to participate in Bandlink, which is a 2 day workshop led by professional tutors.

Additionally, the school band is part of the Combined School Band, which performs as part of the "Singleton Bands in Concert" event.

Science and Engineering Opportunities

The Science and Engineering Challenge is an inter-school competition designed to provide Year 6 students with a positive experience of science and engineering.

Forensic Science Workshops are an interactive educational experience where observation and deductive reasoning combine with real world science. Students take a journey into the world of the scientist and learn how Forensic Science helps the Police to solve crimes every day.

Star Struck

Star Struck is a NSW Department of Education annual performing arts event for Newcastle, the Hunter and Central Coast. It is a showcase of dance, drama and music featuring over 3500 talented public school students.  King Street Public School is proud to be selected to participate in this showcase and give our students an opportunity and appreciation of the performing arts.
